The Constant Friendship Shopping Center in Abingdon welcomed the supermarket to the neighborhood with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on Emmorton Road near Route 24 on Thursday, Dec. 8.

“An Aldi near you is opening on (Dec 8),” officials posted on the company's website. “The savings in Abingdon are getting bigger. Come into Aldi and get your favorite groceries for your home at incredibly low prices. From fresh produce to organic foods, we've got it all for less, every day.”

Now open, the store takes the spot of longtime retailer Gabe’s, which closed last year and is now replaced by Aldi and the new Hobby Lobby.

Officials said that the first 100 customers got a gift bag filled with traditional Aldi fan favorites and other items. Some lucky shoppers were even entered to win a $500 gift card.

According to some shoppers who were there for opening day, the store was packed with customers, but had ample space to accommodate the crowd, though at times there were lines out the door.

Aldi currently has 62 locations across Maryland, including four in Harford County:

  • Aldi 3430 at 3430 Emmorton Road in Abingdon;
  • Aldi 1312 at 12312 Business Center Way in Edgewood;
  • Aldi 746 at 746 South Philadelphia Blvd.;
  • Aldi 599 at 599 Baltimore Pike in Bel Air.

The Abingdon location will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

According to store officials, with more than 2,200 stores in 38 states, Aldi is on track to become the third-largest grocery retailer by the end of 2022, behind Walmart, and Kroger, and just ahead of Albertsons.
